7 Productivity Hacks Every Creative Should Know

Do you find your workdays aimless, burned out, or plagued by the tyranny of the urgent? If so, you’re not alone. Many professionals, especially those in creative roles, face the constant pressure to maximize productivity without sacrificing quality. Here are seven hacks that can help you overcome these challenges and achieve greater success in managing your workday:

  1. Implementing the Big 3 Framework: Start by identifying your Daily Big 3 tasks—these are the three most important tasks you need to accomplish today. By focusing on these key priorities, you can ensure that your day is productive and aligned with your larger goals. Knowing your projects, meetings, deadlines, average office antics, and predictable colleague behavior patterns, plan accordingly by limiting your main priorities to 3 or less. Aiming for a Big 1 or 2 might be the ideal based on your current needs.
  2. Aligning with Your SMARTER Goals and the Company Mission: Your daily work should reflect your annual SMARTER goals (Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Risky, Time-keyed, Exciting, Relevant). These goals keep you focused on your life vision, core values, personal mission, passion, and proficiency, ensuring that each day’s efforts contribute to your long-term success. Your work should also align with the mission of the company. Presumably you’re on board with that already. If not, maybe it’s a sign to reconsider your commitment and future.
  3. Taking Regular Short Breaks: Creativity thrives on breaks. Schedule regular short breaks throughout your day to refresh your mind and prevent burnout. These moments of rest can spark new ideas and maintain your energy levels. Some suggest 5-minute breaks every hour; others recommend the Pomodoro Technique. Maybe it’s a coffee break, power nap, or brisk lap around the campus. Whatever you choose, don’t forget to at least take a deep breath, hydrate, and pause a minute to hit that refocus button.
  4. Silencing Notifications and Phones: During peak focused work times, silence your notifications and put your phone on do not disturb mode. This minimizes distractions and allows you to fully immerse yourself in your tasks, enhancing your productivity and the quality of your work. (Pro tip: Fill out an Ideal Week template from Full Focus. Schedule time blocks during the week for deep work, meetings, breaks, workday startup and shutdown, etc.)
  5. Handling Interruptions with Grace: Interruptions are inevitable. When they occur, handle them gracefully by asking the urgent inquirer to send you an email or message, or to schedule a meeting for another time. This way, you can maintain your focus and address the interruption at a more convenient time. Shutting—or even locking—doors, turning off notifications (see #4), closing email and messenger apps, setting out-of-office replies, or working remotely are all helpful ways to minimize unsolicited encounters.
  6. Adding Margin for the Unforeseen: For any day, any project, building in extra time and planning additional resources is crucial. This buffer allows you to absorb shocks without derailing your progress. Think of it as a safety net that keeps you moving forward, no matter what surprises come your way. Give yourself bandwidth to find freedom and flexibility in sticky situations. And encourage others around you to do the same.
  7. Setting Boundaries and Embracing Constraints: Effective productivity begins with clear boundaries. By defining what is and isn’t a priority, you can prevent burnout and maintain focus on high-impact tasks. Constraints, far from limiting you, foster creativity and innovative problem-solving.

By incorporating these hacks into your workday, you can create a more structured and productive environment. The Big 3 framework helps you prioritize effectively, while aligning with SMARTER goals ensures each day contributes to your life vision. Regular breaks and focused work periods help you stay energized and efficient, while managing interruptions professionally further enhances your ability to stay on track and deliver high-quality work.

Embrace these strategies to transform your workday and achieve your goals with greater ease and efficiency!
